The people that mean the world to you...near or far

When life gets busy, it is amazing how the important things can fall by the wayside while you feel like you are putting out fires. Things that are absolutely the most important things in the world. Friends and family. Especially those special people who live far away from where you do. I love them, they are in my mind, I think of them often, but there can be times of little contact. It has really been on my mind for the last few months.

So I called my Dad today (he lives in Switzerland and yes, it is as beautiful as you imagine), because I haven't spoken to him in a month or so. I wanted to tell him how much I love him and how I've missed him and have a good gander about life etc. Then...he didn't answer! Great...

Well, at least I called and left a message and he knows I've tried, but it is nowhere near the same as actually speaking to him. I sometimes feel like he may not know how much I care about him because I allow everyday life to take over rather than creating the time to make a call. With the time differences and long days at work and not really having a home phone, on top of the social activities, the time I need to rest, the time I try to put aside for my passion projects, it sometimes feels too hard, or the time flys by and all of a sudden a week has passed. But that is pathetic! That is horrible! He is one of the most important people in my life and I CANNOT continue like this. My admin job is not as important as my father.

So what can I do? What can I do to ensure I have the important time to speak to him, and the other important people in my life, especially when life feels so busy and out of control. These are the times it is even more important to connect. I want to involve them in my life, find out what is going on in theirs - laugh together, commiserate together, find out the little and big things going on in their everyday.

Well, I can put aside the time. Cement it in my diary that at least once a fortnight I call him. Write it in my diary that at least once a week I write an email to him (and my mum in Perth, Tatiane my sister, Yvette in the US one of my best friends). Then once a quarter write it in my diary to communicate with my more distant relations - my aunt in Germany, my lovely family in Singapore.

So Daddy, while I couldn't speak to you today - I'm shouting out a message through the World Wide Web :) I love you!!!!! and call me ;)

Red Red Wine!

Red, red wine...
What do you do when you have guests and feel like having some wine but you haven't got any?
You raid the flatmate's stash, looking for the most inexpensive bottle you can replace. Then, before you open the bottle, you are attacked by the fear it could be a really expensive Wolf Blass, so you google the cost of the replacement...
$8.99? Bargain!
'POP'! (well...unscrew)
And then...
Q: what if they see you drinking their wine?!
A: pour it into one of your previously emptied bottles, get rid of the evidence and sip innocently and contentedly on the verandah

True story! Happened to... a friend of mine.
And a replacement is it's way! SSS do not steal nor deceive maliciously!

City Inspiration

I. Love. That Jay-Z song that I don't even know the real name of... I
will discover it, but it's all about New York and how the lights will
inspire you. C'mon you know it right?!

Well, I've had a lovely night out in Sydney-town with a couple of the
girls and I'm on my way home on the good old tram, feeling very
inspired from the conversation and the beautiful city lights I
experienced on the way back (that you can surely see from the photos)!

It is amazing when you have the opportunity to see the inspiration in
the everyday. You sometimes just have to take a moment and stop. When
you do that you can realise that what you go through every day is
really quite remarkable.

When sourcing subjects to blog about, I often just stop and look at
the things that have occurred in my life on that day, the
conversations, or the thoughts, or the events, and really see how
interesting or how applicable they probably are to most people. Not
that my life is anymore interesting than anyone else's, but that the
little (and big!) goings on and thought processes are relevant to a SSS.

Looking back on tonight's conversation, we tackled love,
relationships, saying 'YES' to more things in life, introducing
fitness regimes and how it effects the balance in your life, work and
life balance, making time to cultivate friendships. These are all
things I want to try to help you achieve in your lives my dear SSSs
(and to help achieve in mine! I'm on this exciting journey too!) To
get people thinking and talking about their lives, then giving them a
template to plan and take action!

Is this what you want too?

Make it as you wish SSSs!

Welcome to 2010!

Well SSSs, welcome to the year that is 2010!

Another year (and another decade) has begun and while it is not necessary for a new year to begin to start to change your life, it is a perfect opportunity to reflect and reassess.

Setting an intention for the year is a great way to facilitate change. An umbrella heading of something that you intend to do/be/act on for the year that dictates alot of your actions and behaviours.

My intention for the year is 'INTEGRITY'.

Integrity to me means doing what I say I will. Doing what I promise to others and perhaps more importantly, doing what I promise to myself.

It means being accountible for my words and then for my actions.
It means not promising something just for the sake of it.
It means not promising something when I have no real intention of carrying something out or saying 'Yes' to something without really thinking about it.

Integrity may seem like something small that you say 'of course I have integrity!', but think of all those small things you've said you'll do but have forgotten all about (i'll give you a call next week or it's my turn to take out the garbage next week). Or those bigger goals you've made (losing weight, quitting smoking etc) that you've neglected.

Think realistically before you commit to something, because when you do commit it will actually mean something because your word will become Law. When you say it out loud or say it to someone or write it down somewhere you are committing yourself to following through on it.

If you have integrity your self confidence will build in yourself. When you tell yourself you'll do something, big or small, and then actually do it, each and every time, your self esteem builds because you know you can trust yourself and your respect from others build because they can trust you.

See how important it is?

So, how do you remind yourself of your intention? Just like anything it takes a while to build a habit. But a few reminders around the place will help. Stick a note on the bathroom mirror, on the back of the toilet door, somewhere in the shower, in or on your diary, on your computer and see the intention and think about it - for 10 seconds, just to constantly bring you back to that point. Think about it while you are going through your day and see how you can apply it

So what is your main intention for the year?

Make it as you wish SSSs!
